MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Clinched by seven free-throws in the last minute, the Georgia College men's basketball team (8-6, 1-4 PBC) lost to USC Aiken (11-2, 5-0 PBC) 69-64 Saturday in the Centennial Center.
Jesse Seilern hit three tosses and Sterling Council knocked down four for the Pacers in the final 42 seconds, running a tight game out of reach for GC.
Senior forward Ryan Aquino (Roswell, Ga.) had his fourth 20-point game for GC, tallying 21 with three from downtown and a 6-of-6 effort at the line. Classmate Jared Holmes (Indianapolis) added 18 points and six rebounds to Aquino's team-high seven. Sophomore guard Aaron Robinson (Lawrenceville, Ga.) had a career-high in points by halftime, finishing with 13, including 7-of-10 from the stripe.
USCA started the game on a 15-0 run over the first 5:47, ended by a Robinson free-throw with 13:39 left in the first half. GC battled back to get within nine at 37-28 at the half.
The Bobcats won the second half, eventually tying the game on a pair of Aquino free-throws at 55-55 with 4:48 left in the game, but could never take the lead. With 42 ticks left, Seilem made a heady-play to induce a foul on an attempted three, and subsequently knocked down all three free-throws for a four-point Pacer lead.
Junior Scott Ferguson (Roswell, Ga.) answered for the Bobcats with an old-fashioned three-point play, again cutting the advantage to one. Ferguson finished with seven points. Council then hit two free-throws, bumping it back to three at 67-64. A last-ditch three-point shot by GC missed the mark, and Council hit two more throws to finish it off.
The Pacers out-shot GC 43 percent (22-51) to 41 percent (19-46) from the floor. USCA also edged GC on the glass 33-28, but the difference may have come in bench scoring, as the Pacers' reserves beat the Bobcats' 31-5.
Jeremiah Pojah led the Pacers with 13 points, aided by 12 from Re'Mon Nelson and 10 each from Council and Ronald Zimmerman. Seilern ended with eight points.
The Bobcats are back in action for "Battle of the Cats II" Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m., hosting Augusta State University in the Centennial Center.
