Bobcats Extinguish Flames, 72-59
NEWBERRY, S.C. – Powered by three double-digit scorers, the Georgia College men's basketball team (1-0) dispatched Lee University 72-59 Friday night to start the 2011-12 season with a victory. The Bobcats start the season 1-0 for the sixth straight year, getting this year's win in the opening game of the Mom Reeves Classic, hosted by Newberry College.
Seniors Ryan Aquino (Roswell, Ga.) and Jared Holmes (Indianapolis) paced the Bobcats with 19 and 18 points, respectively. Junior Tarrence Chatman (Macon, Ga.) edged into double digits as well with 10.
The difference for GC came in the turnover department, causing 15 while giving up just nine. In points off turnovers, the Bobcats led 20-11. The 'Cats also did damage at the charity stripe, hitting 12 while the Flames managed just four.
The Bobcats controlled nearly the entire contest, taking the lead for good at 8-6 on a Mike Augustine (Waterloo, Ill.) jumper with 15:08 left in the first half. Augustine finished with six points. Three free throws by Aquino at the 6:08 mark in the first half gave GC its highest lead of 20 at 31-11.
The battle of the boards was even at 31-31, as Aquino led the Bobcats with six. The six caroms put the senior into the school's top-10 career list at 10th at 474, passing both Ken Kemp (2005-09) and Julius Wilcox (1984-88). Aquino is now just seven behind ninth place Willie Jones (1980-82).
The Bobcats advance to play host Newberry in the championship game tomorrow, Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. The Wolves (1-0) clobbered Salem International University tonight 107-87.
