MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The No. 24 Georgia College & State University men's basketball team (14-2, 8-2 PBC) used a second-half surge to get past Columbus State University (5-11, 3-7 PBC) 69-59 tonight (Jan. 28) in the Centennial Center.
Senior guard Shaun Keaton (Albany, Ga.) led the Bobcats with 15 points, with sophomore forward Reece Wiedeman (Suwanee, Ga.) hitting 7-of-8 from the floor en route to 14 points and seven boards. Junior guard Graham Martin (Marietta, Ga.) extended his double-digit scoring streak to nine with 11 points tonight.
The Bobcats struggled to find their shot in the first half, as both teams defended well, a 30-30 deadlock at the break. Martin helped the second-half surge, getting all 11 of his points past halftime.
Georgia College trailed by two at 43-41 with 11:45 left, but went on a 19-4 run capped by a Ty Rowland (Lilburn, Ga.) three-pointer at 6:19. The Bobcats would keep the advantage at double-digits for nearly the remainder of the game. Rowland finished with four points and a game-high eight assists.
Senior Ken Kemp (Dublin, Ga.) cleaned the glass, getting seven of his game-high 10 rebounds on the offensive side. The Bobcats owned a 44-28 advantage overall in rebounding, tying their biggest margin (+16) of the season.
The Cougars' Javarus Stewart led all scorers with 16, including four threes. He got help from Owen Brow at 12 points, and Nick Gagnon at 11.
Keaton now has 1,107 career points, five behind Larry Anderson (1971-75), No. 10 all-time at GCSU. The all-time series with Columbus State now stands at 39-18 in CSU's favor. The Bobcats have won the last three.
With the win, Georgia College moves into a three-way tie for first in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) with No. 7 Augusta State University and No. 12 Armstrong Atlantic State University at 8-2.
The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Jan. 31 at 4 p.m., hosting ASU (14-3, 8-2 PBC). The Jaguars were idle today. Saturday's game will be Blandy Hills Day at the Centennial Center, as the elementary school's drill team will perform.
