LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – When 82 of collegiate golf’s reigning All-Americans converged on the Wigwam Resort Gold Course Dec. 29, Georgia College’s Taylor Smith (Mansfield, Ga.) and Ryan Trocchio (Norcross, Ga.) were among the historic field at the 2012 Patriot All-America.

The event was open to all current male All-Americans from NCAA Divisions I, II, and III, NAIA, NJCAA, and AJGA attending NCAA institutions as freshmen.

The three-round event truly puts forth the best collegiate golf has to offer, but on top of the amazing play was an amazing cause. The event is aligned with Folds of Honor, a special organization linked to our military.

The Folds of Honor Foundation is rallying a nation to ensure no family is left behind in the fight to preserve American freedom. Through scholarships and other assistance, they give back to the spouses and children of soldiers killed or disabled in service to our country.

Each golfer played in the name of a fallen soldier. Smith represented Lance Corporal Philip P. Clark for the duration of the event toting a golf bag with his name on it.

“The event was a lot of fun, and an extremely valuable experience,” said Smith. “Representing a fallen soldier is an incredibly humbling experience.”

University of Arkansas junior Sebastian Cappelen won the event. Cappelen fired a two-under 68 in round three for a total of 206 and a one-stroke victory over UNLV's Kevin Penner.

While Smith and Trocchio were not in the medal running at six- and nine-over par respectively, each Bobcat will receive a golf bag to raffle off, with all funds raised going to the Folds of Honor Foundation. Bobcat fans can look for the bag and raffle tickets at upcoming Georgia College basketball games.

Bobcat golf is back in action Monday, Feb. 11 at the Matlock Invitational in Lakeland, Fla.
