COLUMBUS, Ga. – In a rain-shortened first day, the No. 8 Georgia College golf team shot a first-round 296 at the 2012 Aflac/Cougar Invitational, good for 12-over par and fourth place.
Played at the par-71, 6,515-yard Country Club of Columbus, GC's senior leaders of Patrick Garrett (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Taylor Smith (Mansfield, Ga.) carried the load in the first round with a pair of top-10 finishes among the 90 golfers.
Garrett was at even-par, taking sixth place while Smith was two slots behind at one-over. Smith had a pair of birdies in round one, both coming on par-four holes, Nos. 7 and 10. Garrett posted three birdies, coming on holes 2, 12 and 17.
No. 15 Florida Southern College leads the team race at two-over par, followed by Delta State University three strokes behind. The individual leader is FSC's Tim Crouch, an impressive four-under. He has a two-stroke lead on Reed Lindsey of DSU and Paul McClure of the University of North Alabama.
The 16-team field features six nationally-ranked teams, with the Bobcats ahead of No. 12 UNA, No. 18 UNC Pembroke and No. 21 Georgia Southwestern State University.
Action was shortened today by a nearly two-hour rain delay. Round two will be finished up tomorrow, Oct. 2 beginning at 9 a.m., with the third and final round coming immediately after.
