#16 Bobcat Golf Takes 2012 Pirate Invite, Garrett Individual Title

POOLER, Ga. – Powered by an individual title for junior Patrick Garrett (Kennesaw, Ga.), the No. 16 Georgia College golf team won its first tournament title of the 2011-12 season, taking the 2012 Armstrong Pirate Invitational by a whopping 15 strokes.

In a tournament shortened to two rounds by inclement weather, the Bobcats fired rounds of 286 and 288, good for plus-six on the par-71, 6,897-yard Savannah Quarters Country Club course. This is the second Pirate Invitational that Georgia College has won as the Bobcats also won the 2007 tournament.

Garrett blistered the course with a second-round 66, paired with his 71 in round one for five-under par. He beat the field by four strokes for his second career tournament championship. The 66 shot by Garrett also tied a tournament low round in the 11-year history of the Pirate Invitational, matching the 66 shot by Brandon Kuban of Columbus State University in 2005.

Freshman Ryan Trocchio (Norcross, Ga.) was second on the squad and third overall, carding a pair of 71s for even par. Junior Taylor Smith (Mansfield, Ga.) rounded out the top-10 finishers for GC in seventh, following a 71 with a 74 for three over par.

Sophomore Victor Monte (Chantilly, Va.) was 18th, posting a 73 and 77 for eight over par. Freshman David Sullivan (Woodstock, Ga.) was 43rd with rounds of 74 and 81, finishing at 13-over.

Heavy rains on Monday shortened the 54-hole tournament to just 36 holes, and teams completed between 10 and 16 holes on Monday. A shotgun start on Tuesday saw the Bobcats finish up the first round holding a seven-stroke lead over UNC Pembroke and an eight stroke lead over Armstrong, but the Bobcats put together the second lowest round of the tournament to win going away.

GC beat six Peach Belt Conference (PBC) schools in the tournament. The Bobcats also beat four nationally-ranked teams, including No. 13 UNCP, No. 18 Wingate University, No. 20 Armstrong and No. 24 Belmont Abbey College.

The Bobcats are back in action Monday, March 12 at the Southeastern Collegiate in Valdosta, Ga.
