LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 16 Georgia College golf squad shot a final round 307 Tuesday, finishing plus-31 in 12th place at the Matlock Collegiate Classic, hosted by No. 25 Florida Southern College. GC combined this round with a 295 and 293 yesterday.
The Bobcats finished just four strokes behind Valdosta State University, and three ahead of Eckerd College at the par-72, 7,065-yard Lone Palm Golf Club course.
Freshman David Sullivan (Woodstock, Ga.) led the team for the first time in his young career, carding rounds of 74, 70 and 78 to take 23rd place at six-over par. Junior Patrick Garrett (Kennesaw, Ga.) was one stroke behind in 31st with rounds of 72, 73 and 78.
Classmate Taylor Smith (Mansfield, Ga.) shot the team's best third-round score at 75, joined with yesterday's 75 and 73, to meet Garrett at plus-seven in 31st. Behind him was Victor Monte (Chantilly, Va.) in 46th at plus-12 after rounds of 74, 77 and 77. Freshman Ryan Trocchio (Norcross, Ga.) carded a pair of 80s followed by a 77, and finished 72nd.
The team champion was Florida Tech, edging the trio of No. 1 Lynn University, host FSC and No. 2 Barry University by just one stroke. The individual pace was set by Case Gard of FSC at seven under, just one stroke ahead of Scott Smyers of Barry.
The Bobcats are back in action Monday, Feb. 27 at the Armstrong Pirate Invitational in Savannah, Ga.
