PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 9 Georgia College golf team took second Tuesday at the Argonaut Invitational, falling just three strokes behind host No. 5 University of West Florida. The Bobcats finished at 13-over par for three rounds after a final-round 292.
Senior Billy Shida (Berkeley Lakes, Ga.) saved his best round for last, carding a 66 to leap from 23rd to finish third. Shida was one of five golfers to finish under par for the tournament at the par-72, 6,815-yard Pensacola Country Club course. Shida had rounds of 75 and 74 yesterday.
Classmate Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) finished sixth, following yesterday's 73 and 70 with a 74 today. He finished one-over. Senior Matthew Yonz (Waycross, Ga.) gave GC three golfers in the top-20 by taking 19th. Yonz carded rounds of 76-72-76 for eight over.
Sophomore Patrick Garrett (Kennesaw, Ga.) finished 25th, adding today's 76 to yesterday's 78 and 71 for nine over par. In his first career start, Bayley Craig (Eatonton, Ga.) was 53rd with rounds of 74, 80 and 78.
UWF edged GC by three, but the Bobcats were tops among the three other Peach Belt Conference (PBC) schools in the tournament. No. 25 USC Aiken was third, Georgia Southwestern State University was eighth, and the University of Montevallo took 13th.
The individual title was won by the University of North Alabama's Jace Windom, edging the field and Belmont Abbey College's Adam Hedges by a single stroke.
The Bobcats are back in action Monday March 14 at the First Federal Southeastern Collegiate, hosted by Valdosta State University.
