LAKELAND, Fla. – Powered by senior Billy Shida (Berkeley Lakes, Ga.) atop the individual standings, the No. 15 Georgia College golf team owns the team lead after the first two rounds Monday at the Matlock Collegiate Classic. The tournament is hosted by No. 20 Florida Southern College on the par-72, 7,065-yard Lone Palm course.
Shida followed a first-round 67 with a 69 in round two, good for eight under par. He's bettering the field by three strokes, in the form of Jude Eustaquio of FSC and the University of West Florida's Blake Olson.
Senior Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) also owns a top-10 slot at ninth, carding rounds of 73 and 69 for a two-under 142.
Sophomore Taylor Smith (Mansfield, Ga.) is 63rd, owning rounds of 80 and 75, owning an 11-over 155.
The Bobcats put up consistent rounds of 285, six under par and as many strokes ahead of host FSC. Three other Peach Belt Conference (PBC) schools dot the standings, with No. 7 Columbus State University fifth, No. 25 Lander University 13th and Clayton State University 15th.
The Bobcats will look to keep their hold on first for the third and final round tomorrow, Feb. 15.
