COLUMBUS, Ga. – With senior All-American Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) firing an even par after a pair of rounds, the No. 4 Georgia College golf team stands fifth at the Aflac/Cougar Invitational, hosted by Columbus State University.
Young shot a second-round 69 to offset a first round 73 for even on the par-71, 6,515-yard Country Club of Columbus course. His second round featured five birdies, including a pair each on par fours and par fives.
Sophomore Patrick Garrett (Kennesaw, Ga.) is second on the team and 27th overall at six-over. Garrett started off well at 71, but followed that with a 77. Birdies on the third and fourth helped him to an even par first round.
Classmate Bernardo Bide (Buenos Aires, Argentina) is eight over in 39th, carding a 74 and 76. Bide holed seven birdies over the two rounds, including six on par-four holes. Freshman Gavin Harper (Twin City, Ga.) is tied with Bide, putting up a 70 and 80 to get there. Harper had three birdies in the first round, but no holes under par in the second.
Senior Matthew Yonz (Waycross, Ga.) joins Harper and Bide in 39th, going in the opposite direction of Harper with an 81 followed with a 69. Yonz hit an ace in the first round on the par-three 14th hole, and carded just three holes over par after that.
Host CSU is the team leader at eight-over, holding off both the University of North Alabama and Valdosta State University by a stroke. Barry University's Daniel Stapff is in first place at four under on a pair of 69s.
The Bobcats play the third and final round tomorrow, Oct. 5.
