#1 Georgia College Wins the Kiawah Island Invitational

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The No. 1 Georgia College & State University golf team won their opening tournament of the year, firing a second-round team score of 280, which put them five under in the Kiawah Island Invitational. Their nearest competitor was USC Beaufort who finished seven behind at plus-two in the two-day tourney.

Four of the five Bobcats finished in the top-10 as the nation's top-ranked squad came out firing in its first tournament. The first title of the 2009-10 season came at the par-72, 6875-yard Cougar Point Golf Course.

Senior Francisco Bide (Buenos Aires, Argentina) was outstanding today, shooting a three-under 69, to go to a playoff for the invitational's low medalist at 141. The University of Indianapolis' Seth Fair took the playoff in a sudden-death first hole.

At third place was junior Billy Shida (Berkeley Lakes, Ga.) who fired a 142 over the two days with rounds of 71-71 for two under. Classmate Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) was also three-under today and finished in fifth place with a score of 143, one under par overall.

Tied for ninth was Bobcat senior and three-time All-American Niclas Johansson (Skanor, Sweden) who shot a one-under 71 in today's round and finished with a score of 145. Waycross native Matthew Yonz finished the tournament tied for 33rd with scores of 76-74.

Georgia College returns to the links Sept. 14-15 in Francis Marion University's Raines Intercollegiate where the Bobcats took the runner-up spot a year ago.
