#6 Bobcat Golfs Yonz Selected ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) recently announced the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large teams, and junior Matthew Yonz (Waycross, Ga.) of the No. 6 Georgia College & State University golf team was named to the District 3 College Division Second Team.
Yonz was the top individual for Georgia College at the NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional, taking 14th at one of the toughest region tournament fields in the country. The junior owns a 3.95 GPA in chemistry at Georgia College, the top GPA of any Bobcat student-athlete.
The junior finished the season with a 73.9 stroke average, adding a pair of top-20 finishes in his five starts. Yonz was one of 10 selections to the second team.
The College Division includes the NCAA’s Division II and III as well as the NAIA schools. The At-Large group includes student-athletes from golf, fencing; gymnastics; ice hockey; lacrosse; rifle; skiing; swimming; tennis; volleyball; water polo; and wrestling. Flagler College’s David Cotrone of the tennis team was the only other Peach Belt Conference (PBC) selection, taking first team honors. District 3 includes all schools from Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
The 2010 PBC Champions, Georgia College golf is one of the more decorated programs in school history, having another outstanding season in 2009-10. The team picked up the conference title among three tournament wins, added four all-conference golfers and the PBC Golfer of the Year, as well as the four PING All-Region selections.
The GCSU Department of Athletics, winners of the 2008-09 PBC Commissioner's Cup, sponsors 10 varsity athletic programs at the NCAA Division II level.
