#3 GCSU Golf Takes Third, Johansson Falls in Playoff at Southeastern

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 3 Georgia College & State University golf team jumped three more spots in the final round Tuesday, taking third at the First Federal Southeastern Collegiate, hosted by Valdosta State University. Senior Niclas Johansson (Skanor, Sweden) lost in a playoff for individual medalist honors.

Played at the par-72, 7,097-yard Kinderlou Forest golf course, the Bobcats carded a final-round 292 for an 884 final tally and 20-over par in the 18-team field.

Johansson put up a final round of two under (71-73-70=214) to reach the three-way playoff. Valdosta State’s Chad Smith birdied the first playoff hole to take the title, beating Johansson and Matt Stauch of No. 6 Florida Southern College.

Senior Francisco Bide (Buenos Aires, Argentina) managed a final round 73 for a seven-over 223 in 17th, his fifth top-20 finish this season (79-71-73). Junior Billy Shida (Berkeley Lake, Ga.) was 28th, two strokes behind Bide (78-71-76).

Freshman Taylor Smith (Mansfield, Ga.) was the only Bobcat to save his best round for last. Smith fired a 73 today added with 77 and 80 for 230 in 56th. Junior Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) was the fifth Bobcat in 59th (75-76-80=231).

Host VSU took the team title at a nine-over 873, holding off FSC by nine strokes. Georgia College tied for third with No. 5 University of North Alabama.

The Bobcats are back in action Monday, March 22 at Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee, hosting the Bobcat Invitational, featuring 13 teams ranked in the GolfStat national top-30.
