GCSU’s Johansson Leads Southeastern Collegiate, Team Eighth

VALDOSTA, Ga. Playing just a single round of the First Federal Southeastern Collegiate, the No. 3 Georgia College & State University golf team stands eighth Sunday, with senior Niclas Johansson (Skanor, Sweden) tied for first place.

Played at the par-72, 7,097-yard Kinderlou Forest golf course and hosted by Valdosta State University, the Bobcats fired a first-round 301 at 13-over par in the 18-team field.

Johansson was one-under at 71, while junior Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) was four strokes behind at 24th in a tight field. Freshman Taylor Smith (Mansfield, Ga.) put up a plus-five 77 in 44th.

Junior Billy Shida (Berkeley Lake, Ga.) was 56th with a 78, and senior Francisco Bide (Buenos Aires, Argentina) was the fifth Bobcat at 63rd overall, carding a 79.

No. 6 Florida Southern College and host VSU own the team lead at a three-over 291, holding off No. 1 Barry University by four strokes. Three other golfers sit atop the individual standings, tied with Johansson at one-under.

Round two of three starts tomorrow, with Bide teeing off at 8:39 on hole one, paired with golfers from the University of West Georgia and No. 19 University of West Florida.
