#2 Golf Stands Fifth at NCAA Finals, One Round to Go
BLAINE, Wash. - Putting up a 301 today (May 21) the No. 2 Georgia College & State University golf team remains in the top five at fifth at the NCAA Division II National Championship. The Bobcats were plus-17 today and now stand at plus-39 for three rounds on the par 71, 6,995-yard Loomis Trail Golf Club course.
Junior Niclas Johansson (Skanor, Sweden) continues his consistent play for GCSU, carding a one-over 72 to leap from 14th to sixth at six over par. Johansson holed a pair of birdies on the front half and had just four holes over par on the day.
Sophomore Billy Shida (Berkeley Lake, Ga.) posted a solid 73, and was at even par until the last two holes. He's now at eight-over for the tournament and stands 14th. Junior Pedro C. Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) balanced seven holes over par with three birdies on the day for a plus-five 76. He is 30th at 12-over for the three rounds.
Sophomore Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) struggled today, carding a 10-over effort. He's 16-over in 53rd. Junior Francisco Bide (Buenos Aires, Argentina) is two strokes behind in 66th. Bide also posted his high round of the three with an 80.
No. 7 Cal State-San Bernardino continued its surge to overtake No. 3 Barry University for the team lead. Barry had held the top spot for the first two rounds. CS-SB is at 27-over after today's 295, eight strokes ahead of Barry. No. 6 Sonoma State University and No. 1 Columbus State University are tied for third at one shot behind the Buccaneers, and just three ahead of GCSU.
Gene Webster of CS-SB leads the individual race at an even par 213. Two strokes behind is a tie for second between Wayne State University's Steve Cuzzort and Gavin Smith of IUP.
The Bobcats are set for noon local time start tomorrow, with Bide teeing off first. GCSU will start on the first hole tomorrow, and are teamed with CSU and No. 4 University of North Alabama.
