#2 Bobcats Finish First Round Tied for Sixth at National Championships
BLAINE, Wash. - Posting a 17-over effort for day one, the No. 2 Georgia College & State University golf team stands in a three-way tie for sixth at the NCAA Division II National Championship. The Bobcats posted a 301 on the par-71, 6966-yard Loomis Trail Golf Club Course after round one of the four-round event.
Georgia College was led by three players in the top-30, as just one golfer in the entire field shot under par in round one. The Bobcats started the day on the 10th hole.
Junior two-time All-American Niclas Johansson (Skanor, Sweden) leads the way for GCSU, tied for 20th at a three-over 74. He started the round today with a birdie on 10, and added another on the sixth.
Juniors Pedro C. Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Francisco Bide (Buenos Aires, Argentina) are tied at four-over in 28th. Lima was consistent, shooting par on his first eight holes of the day. Bide led the team in birdies on the day with three, but matched that with seven holes over par.
Sophomores Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) and Billy Shida (Berkeley Lake, Ga.) are both at a six-over 77 in 49th place. Young had a solid finish, at or under par for eight of his final nine holes of the day. Shida went the opposite direction with a great first nine, matching par on all but the 17th hole.
No. 3 Barry University and No. 6 Sonoma State University share the team lead at nine-over. The Bobcats are just eight off the pace, tied with No. 1 Columbus State University and No. 23 Grand Canyon University. Georgia College is just four strokes out of third, held down by No. 16 Northeastern State University.
Cal State-San Bernadino's Gene Webster leads the individual race as the only golfer under par firing a one-under 70. Just one stroke behind is the five-way tie at even par.
The Bobcats are set for an 8:20 a.m. local time start tomorrow, with Bide teeing off first. GCSU will start on the first hole tomorrow, and are teamed with Grand Canyon and Fairmont State University.
