#2 Bobcat Golf Gets Late Surge to Fifth in NCAA Regional First Round
MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. - Getting nine birdies on the back nine as a team in one of the early groups, the No. 2 Georgia College & State University golf squad sat back and watched plenty of teams fall behind as the Bobcats share fifth place after one round at the NCAA South/Southeast SuperRegional today (May 4).
The Bobcats shot a two-over 290 on the par-72, 7,126-yard Robert Trent Jones at the Shoals course. Just two teams managed to shoot under par.
Sophomore Billy Shida (Berkeley Lake, Ga.) powers the Bobcats with a top-five score, standing fourth at a three-under 69, his lowest round this season. Shida was consistent with just one hole over par on the day.
Classmate Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) is 17th with an even-par effort. His birdie on the par-five 17th helped bring him back to even. Junior Niclas Johansson (Skanor, Sweden) is 43rd at two-over. The No. 18 player in the nation was schizophrenic on the back nine with four bogeys and three birdies.
Junior Pedro C. Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) carded a 75 in 56th, fighting out of a triple bogey on the third hole with three birdies after that. Classmate Francisco Bide (Buenos Aires, Argentina) struggled with an 80, as the 2009 Bobcat Invitational Champion will hope to rebound tomorrow.
Host No. 11 University of North Alabama is first at seven-under, with No. 9 Lynn University three strokes behind. No. 12 Barry University is third at even par, with No. 16 University of West Florida at one over and No. 1 Columbus State University tied with the Bobcats. Lynn's Chris Goldan leads the field at five-under, one pace ahead of the UNA duo Jake Greer and Brett Munson.
The Bobcats take to the links again tomorrow with a pair of rounds remaining in the three-day affair. Georgia College is defending the 2008 title and will start with Shida at 12:50 p.m. Follow the action with live stats at www.GolfStat.com .
