#2 Bobcats Ready for PBC Tournament, Johansson and Young All-PBC
CARTHAGE, N.C. - Primed with a win in their last regular-season tournament and a No. 2 National Ranking in the Nike Golf/Golf World Division II poll, the Georgia College & State University golf squad and head coach Jimmy Wilson head to the Little River Resort in Carthage, N.C. for the 2009 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Championship, hosted by UNC Pembroke.
Play begins tomorrow, April 20 continuing to April 21. The Bobcats are armed with the second-best scoring average in the league, behind national No. 1 Columbus State University. GCSU owns a 289.8 with the Cougars just 0.9 strokes ahead.
The Bobcats pursue their first PBC title since 2000, with two All-PBC selections in their starting five. Junior Niclas Johansson (Skanor, Sweden) and sophomore Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) each picked up their second All-PBC honor at an awards banquet Sunday evening.
Johansson leads the Bobcats with a 71.8 stroke average. Of his nine events, eight have garnered top-20 finishes, including six top-10s and three in the top five.
Young posted a 72.6 average this season with five top-20 finishes in eight starts. Young also had two top-five finishes. The Bobcats are one of two PBC schools to get two players on the eight-member All-PBC Team.
Junior Pedro C. Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had a 73.5 during the season with four top-20 finishes. Classmate Francisco Bide (Buenos Aires, Argentina) has the most momentum, coming off an individual championship at the Bobcat Invitational, the final tournament for GCSU. Bide has a 73.7 with three top-20s.
Sophomore Billy Shida (Berkeley Lake, Ga.) has a 74.7 stroke average and four top-20 finishes, starting every tournament for GCSU. Four of the five members in this starting lineup were on last year's team that finished fourth at the NCAA Finals.
The tournament is sure to be tough, as five of the eight conference schools are ranked in the nation's top-25.
