LAKELAND, Fla. - Looking to regain the form that put them fourth in the NCAA Finals a year ago, the No. 6 Georgia College & State University golf team started the spring season today (Feb. 16) at the Matlock Collegiate Classic, hosted by Florida Southern College. The Bobcats stand eighth among the 15 teams after two of the three rounds were completed today.
Played at the par-72, 7,065-yard Lone Palm Golf Club in Lakeland, Fla., the Bobcats carded a two-round 583, tying for eighth with Peach Belt Conference (PBC) foe Columbus State University.
Three Bobcats are tied for the team lead, as Niclas Johansson (Skanor, Sweden), Billy Shida (Berkeley Lake, Ga.) and Matthew Yonz (Waycross, Ga.) each carded a two-over 146. Johansson started with a 75, trimming the second round to a 71. Shida shot better in round one (72-74) and Yonz reversed those numbers, carding an improving 74-72. Each of the golfers tied for 22nd overall.
Sophomore Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) was one stroke behind with a 74 and 73 for 147 in 29th, and junior Francisco Bide (Buenos Aires, Argentina/El Diamante (Calif.)) added three strokes to his first-round 73 for a 149 in 38th place.
PBC school Clayton State University holds the team lead at 287-277=564, while the individual leader is also a Laker, as Will Wilcox owns a 68-67=135.
The Bobcats continue through the final round tomorrow.
