MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Baseball team (14-6, 3-3 PBC) completed their series sweep over the University of Montevallo Falcons (11-12, 1-5 PBC) at John Kurtz Field Saturday with a pair of victories, 5-2 and 17-4.
The first game of the Saturday doubleheader was an exciting one, with the Bobcats making a late-game run to take down the Falcons, 5-2. Georgia College scored five runs on ten hits in the afternoon contest.
Georgia College found themselves in an early hole, trailing 2-0 after four innings of play. The Bobcats made an adjustment to the Falcon pitching and posted a three-spot in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. Senior Brandon Benson (Loganville) sparked a two-out rally by legging out an infield single to third base and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Logan Mattix (Loganville) drove him in with an RBI single. Wesley Wommack (Monroe) was next at the dish and blasted a two-run shot to give the Bobcats a 3-2 advantage heading into the sixth.
Georgia College would tack on two more in the bottom half of the seventh off an RBI single from Wommack who was later credited with stealing home after the runner on first got in a rundown, allowing him to score. Wommack finished game one going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Nate Schmal (Cumming) also had another big game going 3-for-4 at the plate.
Kane Keith (Hogansville) got the start for the blue and green, hurling a solid 5 1/3 innings while allowing two earned on four hits and four strikeouts to earn his second win of the year. Brady Walsh (Marietta) continued his hot start, tossing 3 2/3 of relief work only allowing one hit and fanning three.
Game two of the doubleheader was a little more lopsided. The Bobcat offense totaled 17 runs on 14 hits to secure another blowout win, 17-4. Georgia College trailed 3-1 going into the bottom half of the fifth, but tallied an unbelievable 13 runs in the inning.
The Bobcats tied things up at 3-3 with an RBI single from both Cal Gentry (Perry) and Garrett Green (Bogart). The contest began to get out of hand after Benson smashed a grand slam over the left center field wall to break the game open at 7-3. Georgia College would go on to plate seven more runs in the inning to put the game out of reach after the fifth, leading 14-1.
Notable game two performances came from Gentry and Green. Gentry went 3-for-6 in the lead off position, tallying five RBIs and two runs scored. Green also drove in five runs in his two-hit performance while also scoring twice.
The Keith brothers both earned the victory Saturday with Perry Keith (La Grange) picking up his first win of his carrer, throwing 3 2/3 innings of relief while allowing two hits and one earned.
