TAMPA, Fla. – The Georgia College Baseball team (3-2) saw a late lead evaporate at No. 2 University of Tampa (5-0) in a 6-5 game Saturday night. The Bobcats went toe-to-toe with the top-ranked team on the GC Baseball schedule, leading into the ninth.
The Bobcats picked up the lead in the fifth by bringing three runs across, two coming in via a Wesley Wommack (Monroe, Georgia) double.
Tampa responded with single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth, but due to a Bobcat insurance run in the seventh, Georgia College still held a slim one-run advantage at 5-4. Tampa rallied with two more runs in the ninth to steal a 6-5 win.
Wommack finished with a 2-for-4 day, driving in the two runs and scoring one of his own. Catcher Brandon Purcell (Glennville, Georgia) had a great game as well, going 3-for-5 driving in runs on singles in the fifth and seventh. Second baseman Garrett Green (Bogart, Georgia) rounded out the multi-hit performers with two hits in four trips and an RBI as well.
Lefty Kane Keith (Hogansville, Georgia) had a great start for the Bobcats, posting five innings and allowing two earned runs while fanning three.
The Bobcats are back in action Sunday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m., finishing the three-game set with the Spartans.
