Georgia College Baseball Completes Sweep Over Ohio Valley, 7-4

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Baseball program (3-0) completes the weekend sweep over the Ohio Valley University Fighting Scots (0-3) on Super Bowl Sunday, 7-4.

The Bobcats trailed after the first frame, 1-0, but came alive in the third and fourth when they managed to tally three runs in back-to-back innings to give them a comfortable 6-1 lead heading into the fifth. Georgia College finished their day with a total of seven runs on nine hits and no errors.

The Bobcats' third inning rally began with a lead-off hit-by-pitch followed by a monster home run from senior shortstop Brandon Benson (Loganville), scoring two.  The Bobcats were able to push another one across with a sacrifice fly from Logan Mattix (Loganville) later in the inning.

Georgia College put up a zero in the top half of the fourth, then came back with a pair of home runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Junior Nate Schmal (Cumming) led off with a solo shot, then Benson came up and cracked his second two-run blast of the day to extend the Bobcat lead to 6-1.   Benson and Schmal finished their day going 2-for-4 with four RBIs and 2-for-3 with two RBIs, respectively.

The Bobcats managed to score one more run in the bottom half of the seventh. That was all they needed to seal the sweep over the Fighting Scots.

Ohio Valley was able to string together a few more runs off the Bobcat pitching staff, but it was not nearly enough to trump the strong Georgia College offense.  Sophomore Bradley Spinner (Roswell) started on the bump for the Bobcats and threw four innings on seven hits, one earned run, no walks and one strikeout to earn the win.  Sophomore Perry Keith (La Grange) worked an impressive inning and two-thirds out of the bullpen, bridging the gap to get to senior Trevor Guthrie (Cumming).  Guthrie entered the game in the top of the eighth and worked through the final two innings to earn a six-out save.

Georgia College looks to keep their winning streak alive as they head to the University of Tampa for a tough road series Friday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m.
