MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – An eight spot in the second inning surged Georgia College baseball (2-0) over the Fighting Scots of Ohio Valley University (0-2), 11-2.
The Bobcats brought the sticks again Saturday afternoon; recording 11 runs on 12 hits. Five players in the Georgia College starting lineup managed to string together a multi-hit afternoon.
Nothing for the Bobcats in the opening frame, but the bats came alive in the second tallying a total of eight runs to break the game open early. Freshman Cal Gentry (Perry) put them on the board with a bases-loaded single that scored two. Following a walk to load the bases, senior shortstop Brandon Benson (Loganville) cleared the bases with a grand slam over the left field fence giving the Bobcats a comfortable six-run lead. Georgia College tacked on two more off a Logan Mattix (Loganville) double and a Garrett Green (Bogart) sacrifice fly to make it 8-0 after two innings of play.
Mattix kept it going for the Bobcats in the sixth when he hit a moon shot for a solo home run over the left field wall. Mattix had a big day going 2-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBIs.
Gentry and Green finished the day with a pair of hits and both of them knocking in two RBIs.
Eleven runs was plenty for the Georgia College pitching staff who collectively gave up just two runs on eight hits. Senior Kane Keith (Hogansville) got the start for the Bobcats going five innings giving up no runs on five hits, no walks and five strikeouts. Relieving him was sophomore Colin LoCurto (Kennesaw) who tossed two and two-third innings giving up two earned on three hits, two walks and whopping six strikeouts. Sophomore Logan Hicks (Statham) closed out the contest with one and one-third innings allowing no runs on one hit, no walks and two strikeouts.
Georgia College looks to make it a clean sweep when they take on the Fighting Scots for the series finale Sunday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m.
