MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Junior pitcher Spencer Thomas (Loganville, Ga.) of the No. 24 Georgia College baseball team (35-17) was named Bobcat Athlete of the Week for the week ending May 18. This marks the first such honor for Thomas and the fifth for the Bobcat baseball program this season.
Thomas tossed a shutout in last week's NCAA Southeast Region Tournament opener against No. 3 University of Mount Olive. He scattered nine hits and just two walks while throwing 129 pitches in the gem, improving the pitcher to an 8-0 record. Thomas fanned two, but none before the eighth inning.
The Bobcats went 35-17 in 2014, a record-setting year for the offense, coming into the NCAA Tournament as the top team in Division II baseball in both on-base percentage and runs per game. Georgia College reached as high as No. 6 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper National Rankings, and put catcher Steve Hazel (Kentwood, Mich.), first baseman Clay Ardeeser (Loganville, Ga.) and designated hitter Taylor Hinshaw (Winder, Ga.) on the varied all-region teams. The NCAA Regional Appearance was the 11th in program history, and the fourth in head coach Tom Carty's seven seasons.
