INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA released the first edition of the NCAA Division II Baseball Regional Rankings Wednesday, with Georgia College positioned No. 5. These rankings are used to determine the at-large teams to the NCAA Regional Tournaments, slotted for May 15-18.
The Peach Belt Conference (PBC) owns six of the top-eight slots, including five of the top six. PBC foe Lander University is No. 1, with Mount Olive College of the Conference Carolinas (CC) second, Columbus State University at No. 3, USC Aiken fourth and the Bobcats rounding out the top five.
UNC Pembroke is sixth, with South Atlantic Conference (SAC) member Catawba College in seventh. It's back to the PBC for No. 8 and the University of Montevallo.
Automatic bids go to the three conference tournament winners; the PBC is slated to hold its tournament May 10-11 in Aiken, S.C. Both the CC and SAC Tournaments are underway now, leading into the weekend. That leaves three remaining at-large slots to be determined by the final region rankings, set for next week.
Georgia College stands 30-12 on the year thus far, with seven games remaining. The Bobcats play at Montevallo Saturday and Sunday for Georgia College's final road PBC series of the season.
The Georgia College Department of Athletics, two-time winners of the PBC Commissioner's Cup, sponsors 11 varsity athletic programs at the NCAA Division II level.
