MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 23 Georgia College baseball season is right around the corner and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) recently released its preseason honors, with a quartet of Bobcats pulling in awards.

Named to the ABCA/Rawlings Preseason All-American list in the Southeast Region were shortstop Tanner Funk (Kearney, Mo.) and lefty pitcher Mike Guinane (Glenview, Ill.). Added to the “Players to Watch” list was outfielder Josh Young (Lake Havasu City, Ariz.), while Karsten Strieby (Brier, Wash.) earned a slot as one of the “Newcomers to Watch” for the region.

Funk was an All-American in all three organizations at shortstop a year ago, also earning first team All-Peach Belt Conference (PBC) honors. Now a senior, Funk hit .392 last season, ripping 20 doubles with 54 RBI and 45 runs.

Guinane went 9-1 with a 3.84 ERA and 64 strikeouts in his 91 1/3 innings in 2011. He earned a slot on the 2011 Rawlings/ABCA All-Southeast Region Second Team, and the All-PBC second team as well.

Young was the everyday starter in leftfield for GC in his first season, batting in the top two slots. A .291 hitter, Young scored 46 runs and drove in 37 while swiping an amazing 30 bases in 39 tries. Strieby joins the Bobcats this year after transferring from Arizona Western College, where he was a teammate of Young’s for one season. He looks to add some power to the lineup and figure into the first base and designated hitter positions.

The Bobcats start the 2012 season Saturday, Feb. 4 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against King College (Tenn.).
