GC’s Ward, Funk, Guinane Named All-Region

MT. PLEASANT, Mich – The Georgia College baseball team put three players on the Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Southeast Region Teams, the organization announced recently.

Outfielder Shawn Ward (Evans, Ga.) and shortstop Tanner Funk (Kearney, Mo.) each earned first team slots, while starting pitcher Mike Guinane (Glenview, Ill.) picked up a second-team nod.

The Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Co-Player of the Year, Ward put up gaudy numbers in 2011. A .398 hitter, Ward paces the PBC in RBI at 61, adding a slugging percentage of .612 and 49 runs scored. This is his second selection to this team, after being named to the second team a year ago. Ward is the first two-time recipient since relief pitcher Michael Newman in 2006 and 2007. Eleven Bobcat outfielders have made this list all-time.

In his first year with the Bobcats, Funk was second on the team in hitting at .393 with two home runs and 54 RBI. He also led the PBC in doubles with 20. He slugged .520 and scored 45 runs. Funk is the first shortstop to make the list since Mike DeVeaux in 2006. GC has put six shortstops on these region teams all-time.

Also in his first season for GC, Guinane was 9-1 with a 3.84 ERA and 64 strikeouts over 91 1/3 innings. Guinane is the 16th pitcher to take ABCA All-Region honors for Georgia College.

All-time, GC baseball has put 51 student-athletes on the ABCA All-Region squads. Funk and Ward will now move on to the All-America ballot.

The Bobcat baseball team went 35-17 in 2011, a season that saw them hold down the No. 1 spot in the country for two weeks. The Bobcats finished second in the PBC West, honoring three all-region players, including PBC Co-Player of the Year Ward.
