Ward Leads Bobcat Four on All-PBC List
COLUMBUS, Ga. – Rightfielder Shawn Ward (Evans, Ga.) was named the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Co-Player of the Year Saturday night at the PBC Baseball Awards Banquet, joining three other Bobcats in taking home All-PBC honors.
Ward shares the league's honor with Francis Marion University outfielder Buddy Sosnoskie.
Ward hit .392 with seven home runs and a league-leading 59 RBI during the regular season. The two-time All-PBC First Team selection becomes the first PBC Player of the Year for Bobcat baseball since Justin Mills in 2007. Ward is the fourth GC baseball player to receive the honor all-time.
Joining Ward on the first team was catcher Richard Pirkle (Norcross, Ga.). Pirkle makes his third All-PBC Team, after coming in at catcher in 2010 and designated hitter in 2008. He hit .305 with a league-best 12 home runs this season, driving in 37. Pirkle is the first three-time All-PBC pick in GC baseball history.
Also on the first team was shortstop Tanner Funk (Kearney, Mo.) and lefty starter Mike Guinane (Glenview, Ill.) earned a second team nod. Funk was a team-best .393 with two home runs and 54 RBI. He also led the PBC in doubles with 19. Guinane compiled a 9-1 record with a 4.04 ERA and 56 strikeouts over 84 2/3 innings. Both men are in their first year with the Bobcats.
The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, May 9 at 9 a.m., facing the loser of today's FMU/Augusta State University game.
