#24 GC Baseball Tops Montevallo 9-5 for Series Sweep
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 24 Georgia College baseball team (28-14, 12-9 PBC) stays in the hunt in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) West Division thanks to a three-game sweep of the University of Montevallo (18-23, 6-15 PBC), capped by Sunday's 9-5 victory at John Kurtz Field.
The Bobcats tagged 15 hits in the ballgame, jumping out to a 6-0 lead by the end of the fourth. GC scored in each of the first six innings. UM cut it to 9-5 with a pair of runs in the eighth, but couldn't inch any closer.
Third baseman Travis Echols (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was 3-for-5 with three runs to lead the hit parade. Second baseman Matthew Robinson (Hull, Ga.) added two hits in three trips from the nine slot, driving in three runs.
Leftfielder Josh Young (Lake Havasu City, Ariz.) was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, with rightfielder Shawn Ward (Evans, Ga.) going 2-for-4, scoring once and driving in two. Catcher Richard Pirkle (Norcross, Ga.) capped the multi-hit performers with a 2-for-5 day, scoring one and driving in another.
GC also stole seven bases in eight tries, with Young and Echols each taking a pair of pillows.
Lefty starter Jason Nicholas (Wright City, Mo.) got the win (7-2) to share the team lead, working 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs. The senior fireballer pulled off two wins in as many starts this week.
Montevallo lefty Alex Guilford (4-3) took the loss, throwing four innings and allowing four earned runs. Third baseman Will Fulmer was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
GC is now 12-9 in PBC play, good for second in the PBC West behind 12-8 Columbus State University. The Bobcats are back in action Tuesday, April 19 at 4:30 p.m. with a non-conference battle against Valdosta State University (17-20). The Blazers have a game Monday at Saint Leo University before coming to Milledgeville.
