#3 GC Baseball Pfells Pfeiffer, 8-3

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – A big blast off the bat of Benton Yaun (Marietta, Ga.) changed the tide of a tight game Friday night, as the No. 3 Georgia College baseball team (6-3) beat Pfeiffer University (5-5) 8-3 at John Kurtz Field.

With the score at 2-1 headed to the bottom of the third and after two quick outs, a pair of Bobcats reached base via walks. GC junior first baseman Yaun then took the second pitch he saw well over the right field fence for a three-run home run, making it a 5-1 score. GC tacked two more on in the fifth and won despite getting out-hit 12-9.

Rightfielder Shawn Ward (Evans, Ga.) went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run, ripping an RBI double in the first. Second baseman Luke McKay (Augusta, Kan.) was 2-for-3 with an RBI double of his own, while shortstop Tanner Funk (Kearney, Mo.) had just one hit, but tallied an RBI and a pair of runs.

Lefty starter Jason Nicholas (Wright City, Mo.) got out of jam after jam—some of his own creation—stranding 14 Falcon runners on base. Nicholas improves to 2-1 after going 5 2/3 innings, scattering 10 hits and allowing three runs. Senior Ryan Parson (Madison, Ga.) threw the final 3 1/3 innings scoreless with three strikeouts for his first save of the season.

Falcon starter John McDaniel (0-2) took the loss, going 3 2/3 innings allowing five runs. Shortstop Preston Lyon was the hitting star, going 2-for-5 while driving in two.

The Bobcats continue the three-game, three-day set with Pfeiffer tomorrow, Feb. 19 at 1 p.m. Prior to the contest, GC Athletics Hall of Fame inductees Scott MacLeod, Keith Slocumb and Yeini (Gutierrez) Thompson will each throw ceremonial first pitches.
