#3 Bobcat Baseball Sweeps West Georgia
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – In a nail-biting doubleheader, the No. 3 Georgia College baseball team (5-2) edged the University of West Georgia (3-3) 2-1 and 6-5 Sunday at John Kurtz Field.
In game one, sophomore Mike Guinane (Glenview, Ill.) went 8 2/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on eight hits and a pair of walks, fanning three. Guinane improves to 2-0 in as many starts, while Tanner Moore (Thomasville, Ga.) got the final out for his second save.
GC got two runs on just three hits, taking advantage of West Georgia miscues in the first to plate both runs. Patrick Daugherty (Kennesaw, Ga.) singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then stole third. After a Josh Young (Lake Huvasu City, Ariz.) walk, Daugherty scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Young advanced to third on the same error, scoring on a Richard Pirkle (Norcross, Ga.) sacrifice fly.
In the ninth Guinane got two quick outs, then a pair of errors made things interesting. Guinane walked a pair, the second coming with the bases loaded and thus ending his day, turning it over to Moore.
In game two, GC was down 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth, rallying for the 6-5 win.
In the bottom of the seventh and final inning, Daugherty singled and stole second. After a walk for rightfielder Jim Moreland (Suwanee, Ga.), Young put down a picture-perfect bunt that the catcher threw wild, allowing Daugherty to score the tying run. With runners on second and third, Moreland broke for home on a wild pitch, scoring underneath the pitcher's tag.
Reliever Matthew Robinson (Hull, Ga.) threw three innings of scoreless ball, allowing two hits and fanning three for the win, improving to 1-0. Reliever Garrett May (0-1) took the loss without recording an out in the seventh.
Yaun finished game two 2-for-2 with a run and RBI, while Daugherty was 2-for-2 scoring twice.
The Bobcats are back in action Friday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m., hosting Pfeiffer University (4-3). The Falcons have two more games this week before coming to Milledgeville.
