MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Senior Martin Dewald (Mannheim, Germany) of the No. 4 Georgia College & State University baseball team (39-15) was named GCSU Athlete of the Week for the week ending May 16. This is the second such honor for Dewald this season and the fifth for the Bobcat baseball squad.
Dewald led the Bobcats to the Southeast Regional Championship title tossing two complete games for a combined ERA of 1.50 in his two appearances. In the 4-3 win over Mount Olive College May 13, the righty allowed three hits and one walk, while striking out five batters.
Dewald impressed yet again in the championship game May 16, as the ‘Cats squared off against Francis Marion University. The senior was lights-out in the 9-0 contest, giving up just six hits, walking none and fanning eight. For the week, the German native allowed three runs, walked one and sat down 13 batters over 18 innings.
Advancing to the World Series for the first time since 1995, the Bobcats open up play Saturday in Cary, N.C. taking on No. 1-ranked UC-San Diego at 5 p.m.
