MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - A Georgia College & State University baseball signee for the 2009 season, power-hitting first baseman Ryan Voelkel recently inked a deal to play with the Atlanta Braves organization.
Voelkel, a 6-foot-6 240-pound first baseman, spent the last two
seasons at Green River Community College in Auburn, Wash. under
head coach Matt Acker. He played his high school ball at Kentlake
High in Covington, Wash.
Voelkel hit .319 as a sophomore, swatting a school-record 10 home runs. His dinger total also led the NWAACC, the wooden-bat junior college league where the Gators play. He added 12 doubles and 36 RBI during his sophomore season.
In 2008, the Bobcat team finished fifth in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) standings, recording 30 wins for the fifth-straight season (33-24). The Bobcats landed their first All-PBC designated hitter since 2000 when Richard Pirkle (Norcross, Ga.) picked up the honor, and Michael Newman (2005-08) was named a Daktronics All-South Atlantic Region reliever.
