MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - A bases-loaded push bunt by senior Danny McCorkell (Wentzville, Mo.) capped a come-from-behind win in the bottom of the ninth today (Feb. 5). Georgia College & State University baseball (1-0) took a 6-5 victory over No. 36 Erskine College (2-1) at John Kurtz Field.

The Bobcats scored the final three runs of the game, getting most of their final-inning rally with two out. In the bottom of the ninth down 5-4, a pair of strikeouts sandwiched a Kyle Allen (Conyers, Ga.) walk. With two out, Allen stole second and third baseman Steve Muoio (Rochester, N.Y.) singled him home to tie the game. A walk and a hit-batsman loaded the bases for McCorkell's gutsy bunt, laid just beyond the pitcher toward the third-base side.

"One of the best things to have as a coach is a guy you can trust who also trusts in himself," said GCSU head coach Tom Carty. "Danny and I talked about laying down the bunt while he was on deck. He's a senior, and I told him ‘if you think you can do it, I believe in you'."

Reliever Martin Dewald (Manheim, Germany) picked up a win in his first Division II appearance, fanning five over two innings of no-hit ball. Erskine closer Atlee Peterson took the loss in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Some new faces impressed in their Bobcat openers. Along with Dewald, Allen finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and a stolen base, and Muoio was 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored. Muoio's first Division II hit went over the rightfield fence for a two-run home run in the third.

The Bobcats took their first lead in the fifth at 3-2 when Sean Harrell (Martinez, Ga.) scored on a catcher's throwing error after stealing third. Senior Brooks Robinson (Evans, Ga.) ripped a pair of singles, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Georgia College is back in action Sunday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. for a doubleheader at No. 2 University of Tampa (1-0). The Spartans most recently beat Florida Tech 11-1 Feb. 3.
