Georgia College Tennis Teams Tabbed for NCAA Tournament
INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA revealed the 2010 Division II Tennis Regional Tournaments Wednesday night, with both Georgia College & State University teams making the field. The Bobcat men will travel to Columbus, Ga. and the women to Morrow, Ga., with action beginning May 6.
The Georgia College men were selected to play at No. 10 Columbus State University, and will be in action May 7, taking on the winner of the No. 12 Lander University/Lincoln Memorial University match. In 2009, the Bobcats won their regional section, eventually advancing to the Elite 8.
The No. 14 Georgia College men’s tennis program owns a 15-6 mark this season, taking third in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) at 6-3. Sophomore All-PBC selection Jerome Leborgne (Coordimanche, France) leads the Bobcats, going 10-7 in first singles, while third-singles senior Max Beliankou (Minsk, Belarus) leads the team in victories at 16-3. The most successful doubles pairing for the 2010 squad is Beliankou and senior Giovane Nucci (Santa Catarina, Brazil) at 9-6, primarily in the second slot.
The NCAA Tournament appearance is the 11th in school history, and the fourth-straight.
The No. 30 women’s team is 11-11, and will square off with Lincoln Memorial May 6 at the section of the regional hosted by No. 12 Clayton State University. In 2009, the Bobcats dropped a first-round match to Columbus State.
Senior Diane Danna (Paris) is the most decorated Bobcat, taking two All-PBC honors, both in singles and doubles, paired with Bertille Lion (Lyon, France). The duo is 12-10 this season at first doubles. Danna and Lion also share top singles records at 16-4, Danna in first singles and Lion primarily at third.
The NCAA Tournament appearance is the 16th in a row for Georgia College women’s tennis.
