MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Building a strong lead early, the Columbus State University Cougars held off a late rush by Georgia College Bobcats, winning the inaugural “Battle for the Pickle Barrel” rivalry competition between the two athletic departments.

The Cougars swept all four fall sports meetings and maintained that lead after a split for both men’s and women’s basketball programs.

CSU took both tennis matchups, which was quickly balanced out by a regular-season sweep for Georgia College softball. The next five points went to the Cougars with a sweep of a baseball series, a higher finish in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Championship for golf and a win over Bobcat softball in the PBC Tournament. The Bobcats stopped the run with a win over CSU baseball in that PBC postseason.

Of the 11 potential points gathered through off-the-field opportunities, the Bobcats took nine. Georgia College owned better team GPAs for the 2012-13 school year in eight of the 10 sport programs and took the point for more Make-A-Wish funds raised. But the rally would stop there, as Columbus State pulled off the slim 16-13 victory.

As both athletic departments begin their respective first seasons of varsity volleyball this coming fall, the presentation of the Pickle Barrel Trophy will take place Friday, Oct. 18 prior to the teams’ PBC matchup. Prior to the match, Bobcat Director of Athletics Wendell Staton and the Pickle Barrel Café and Sports Pub owner Bob Jaworski will present the rivalry trophy to Cougar Director of Athletics Jay Sparks
