Bobcat Student-Athletes to Sell Stars for Make-A-Wish
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Teaming up with an NCAA Division II initiative, Georgia College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be selling Make-A-Wish Stars Oct. 10-12 from 11-2 each day on the GC campus.
The SAAC will sell the stars for $1 starting tomorrow at the fountain near the Arts & Sciences Building. All proceeds go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The stars will then be hung in the Centennial Center.
The GC Department of Athletics was honored by the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) this past summer for the most improvement in money raised for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Georgia College won the Most Improved Award after boosting their efforts from $500 up to $2,434 this past year. The amount ranked the fourth-highest in the Peach Belt.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Born in 1980 when a group of caring volunteers helped a young boy fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer, the Foundation is now the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 66 chapters in the United States and its territories. With the help of generous donors and more than 25,000 volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants a wish every 40 minutes and has granted more than 171,000 wishes in the U.S. since inception. Make-A-Wish and NCAA Division II entered into a partnership in 2003.
The Georgia College Department of Athletics, two-time winners of the PBC Commissioner's Cup, sponsors 11 varsity athletic programs at the NCAA Division II level. As a Division II program, Bobcat Athletics prides itself on balancing the life of the student-athlete, evidenced by the teams' multiple appearances in post-season competition as well as documented academic success and community-service involvement.
