GC Athletics Gets 14 on ADA Academic Achievement Awards List

CLEVELAND – The Georgia College athletic department was recently honored by placing 14 student-athletes on the list of 2010-11 DII Athletic Directors Association (ADA) Academic Achievement Award recipients.

GC women’s soccer had the most on the list with five, as seniors Mary Rob Plunkett (Augusta, Ga.), Jessica Newland (Hiram, Ga.), Kelli McLane (Lawrenceville, Ga.), Ally Treat (Fayetteville, Ga.) and Jessica Binkowski (Cumming, Ga.) each took spots.

Women’s cross country was represented by Dani Destiche (Snellville, Ga.) and Victoria Dobson (New Hamburg, Ontario), while the men’s harriers put Dan Horseman (Cohutta, Ga.) on the list.

The tennis squads each had two honorees, with Robert Angelucci (Acworth, Ga.) and Jerome Leborgne (Courdimanche, France) joining Michelle Lingner (Dunwoody, Ga.) and Kim Lochner (Neu-Isenburg, Germany).

Softball senior Bailey Thompson (Vidalia, Ga.) and golf senior Matthew Yonz (Waycross, Ga.) also earned spots on the squad.

In order for a student-athlete to receive an Academic Achievement Award, he or she must: have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, have attended a minimum of two years (four semesters) of college level work and have been an active member of an intercollegiate team during his/her last academic year.

The Academic Achievement Awards is a program that recognizes the academic accomplishments of student-athletes at the Division II level. Ninety-eight institutions sent in nominees for the 2010-11 Academic Achievement Awards, while a total of 3,676 student-athletes are being recognized this year. Just five Peach Belt Conference (PBC) schools had student-athletes on the list.
